Benny Boom, who's directing the new Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me, has responded to John Singleton dissing the film.
Singleton, who was close to Pac and worked with him in Poetic Justice, pulled out as the biopic's director in 2015 and was replaced by Boom. Singleton later said this during a ComplexCon panel:
"I haven't watched it, and I refuse to watch it," Singleton, stated. "I know that they fucked it up, so I'm not even trying to give it any attention."Here's how Benny responded during a recent interview with GQ:
"I know John, and this is the first time I'm speaking about it publicly, but I feel like we have brothers who you think are supposed to support and they don't," he said. "The community we have of directors of color is very small. I'm not saying you're supposed to go out and cheerlead for everybody, but there needs to be support, and support sometimes just means not saying anything."Later in the interview, Boom questioned whether Singleton and Pac were really that close, especially towards the end of Pac's life.
"I just felt disappointed about the rhetoric," Boom explained. "I understand he's disappointed in the process, but Tupac was not happy with every single person he came in contact with by the end of his life ... The project is happening the way that Pac wants it to happen, and there's nothing that's gonna stop it."Do you think Singleton would be a better director for the Pac movie because he knew him, or would his close relationship with the rapper make it hard for him to be objective?
