Christian Rapper Trip Lee To Be Only Hip Hop Artist To Debut On The Charts This Week

Maybe Lil Wayne should have dropped Tha Carter 5 yesterday.

It will be a pretty dead week for Hip Hop albums, with HITS Daily Double projecting only Christian rapper Trip Lee's album Rise to crack the top ten among debuts over all genres.

The Reach Records release should move between 17-20 thousand copies. In contrast, last week T.I.'s Paperwork moved 74,000 for third place and Logic's Under Pressure did 71,000 for fourth.

Lee's album is somewhat of a surprise because the Southern rapper had said in 2012 he was retiring from music, and later began training to be a pastor. However, Lee has since clarified that statement and went back into the studio after recovering from a case of chronic fatigue syndrome.

The big, big winner this week was Taylor Swift, whose album 1989 is projected to move more than 1.1 million units. That would give Swift the first platinum album in all of 2014.

Wayne and his Young Money mate Nicki Minaj still each have albums slated for 2014, and could conceivably match Swift in metal.

If they don't, that will be the answer to why Hip Hop got more poppy in 2015.
