El Chapo Guzman is sitting inside a United States federal prison.
His son Ovidio Guzman Lopez is not and is helping lead the drug trade for the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico.
Yesterday, young Ovidio was arrested by Mexican authorities in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state where the Lopez family is based.
In retaliation, the Sinaloa Cartel took to the streets and declared an all-out war with the police, flexing military-grade weapons. Suddenly, there was footage showing trucks and buses on fire and bodies lying in the street.
The carnage was such that the Mexican authorities had to release Ovidio from custody to prevent things from going completely left.
“This decision was taken to protect citizens. You cannot fight fire with fire,” Mexican President , Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in his daily press conference on Friday morning. “We do not want deaths. We do not want war.”
That some serious (and scary) power.
