Kendrick Lamar Had His 'DAMN.' Producers Sleep In The Studio

Kendrick Lamar has scored the biggest hit of his career with his fourth album DAMN.

Kung Fu Kenny and his producer Sounwave demanded perfection on the project, and Sounwave explained to GQ the lengths to which they were willing to go to achieve it.

"Once he got his whole brainstorming thing down and we knew the direction we were going we locked down the studio for months. Never left. Literally sleeping bags in the studio," Sounwave said. "Every producer who was on this project literally had to sleep in the studio. We were not leaving until this was a perfect sound to us."
Kendrick isn't the first rapper to employ this extreme technique. In fact, his sales rival Drake has gone as far as setting up tents for his producers to live in.

Last year, OVO producer Majid of Majid Jordan explained what went down during the making of Nothing Was The Same.

We got back Toronto and they were just starting the beginnings of Nothing Was The Same, in 2013. They basically put us in a studio, and it was like a studio camp, there were tents in there,” Majid explains. “Make beats. Stay in the dungeon. You can not leave. You can not tell anybody you’re working on the project,” he continued, pouring it on heavy. “I slept in a tent in the studio.”
When the album becomes a certified smash hit -- like Nothing Was The Same and DAMN. are -- we guess it's all worth it.
