Earlier this month, Bobby Shmurda's fourth request to be released pending his trial on drugs and guns charges was denied by a judge. The 21-year old's bail remains at $2 million. Since he was first locked up almost a year ago, there has been talk that his label, Epic, should post bail for him
In an interview with Rap Radar, Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid explained why they've let their artist rot in prison.
"People don't know anything about my business, right? It's really not their business, Reid said. That's the truth about it, right? We're not elected officials here. And we're not at liberty to disclose how we do business. It's fair practice, I can tell you that. But, it's not the industry that it once was. We seriously don't make the money we used to make. That's a fact of life, right?"He also compared the Shmurda situation to that of Snoop Dogg, who was bailed out (and later acquitted with Johnnie Cochran as his lawyer) on murder charges in 1993.
"Bobby Shmurda is not the same as Snoop Dogg and Murder Was The Case, who's coming off The Chronic and his first album. It's a different era, ya know? And, we're a publicly held corporation. We just aren't in the same position we were in back in those days. So, it's a different day."Although Reid isn't likely to land a hand, he still believes good things will happen to Shmurda.
"I'm crazy about that kid and I think about him often," he says. "And I feel like, ya know, his better days are ahead of him. I do believe that. And I think it's unfortunate what has taken place."What do you think about Reid's words? It sounds an awful lot like he's saying Shmurda's just not worth it.
