Soulja Boy's "Crank That" was a huge, Hip Hop shifting single when it dropped in 2007, and it made him a star.
But despite how big the song was, Soulja believes it would be an even bigger hit if it dropped today.
“Actually the f*cking numbers and the sh*t I did back then is f*cking legendary, amazing compared to today’s, from the technology that I was using," said Soulja during an interview. "I had LimeWire, that’s it. Imagine if I had TikTok … You know how many people would’ve been doing the 'Crank That' dance?"
If you didn't know, the song was the first single to sell over 3 million digital copies, and Soulja became a pioneer when it comes to finding music success online.
But some didn't care for the single's simplicity and lack of lyricism, namely Snoop Dogg, which Soulja talked about in an interview last month.
"When I first came out, he was like, ‘Crank That?' What is this [bullsh*t]?’ N*gga, that hurt my f*cking soul. I wanted to cry," said Soulja about Snoop. "I was 17 at the time so I'm like, 'this is my idol f*cking telling me that I suck.' I’m like, what the [f*ck]?"
Do you agree with Soulja that "Crank That" would be an even bigger hit today?
