Wendy Williams Brushes Off Aaliyah Backlash

The Aaliyah biopic, which aired this weekend on Lifetime, has been the most talked about basic cable movie since Snarknado. And nobody has had anything nice to say.

The project seemed doomed from the beginning; Aaliyah's family didn't want to release her music to the producers, and Zendaya Coleman, who was originally cast as the R&B princess, ended up dropping out of the project amid controversy that she was too light-skinned for the role.

Twitter was particularly cruel in its collective review of the movie, as was producer Timberland, who was upset that he was depicted by an actor who looked nothing like him.

A lot of this ire went to the film's producer, Wendy Williams, and she responded on The Wendy Williams Show today.

"My Aaliyah movie broke the internet," Williams said with an ear-to-ear grin. "Whether you loved it or hated it, you watched it. It was the second-highest-rated movie on cable this year. We all have opinions."

Williams then went on to say the movie would air again tonight. We didn't have the misfortune of watching the apparent abomination the first time around, but it seems like a lot of folks did. If you saw it, was it as bad as they say?
