Wiz Khalifa Weighs In On The Old-School Vs. New School Hip Hop Debate

Wiz Khalifa threw his two cents into the old school versus new school rap debate.

It's a debate that usually happens when the younger generation of MCs replaces the previous one in terms of popularity. 

But what's different this time around is that many of the OG rappers are still active. Meaning, they're still recording and performing and still have strong opinions about the music. Kurtis Blow wasn't releasing records side by side with A Tribe Called Quest back in the day, for example, so there was no beef.

In the last couple of weeks, there's been old school, new school rap debate between Tory Lanez and Royce Da 5'9" on who won the battle between Lanez and Joyner Lucas. Offset and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony also got into it about who had the greatest group. And there was even major disagreement between younger and older artists about who the king of R&B is.

But Wiz said all of the debating is unnecessary because people should be focusing on making good music, not competition. On top of that, he seemed to agree with Layzie Bone that making stellar music separates the good artists from the bad ones, not their bank accounts.

“A lot of these G.O.A.T.S, these legends that we all love so much, when y’all were like 19, 20, 21, your parents probably thought your music was trash as well,” he said. “[Their parents] weren’t really trying to get in the studio and compete. The crazy thing is a lot of the G.O.A.T.s and legends now, they have kids that are 16, 17, all the way to 21, and this is the music that they enjoy.”

He went on from there.

“And the craziest thing about it is it’s not a competition," said Wiz. "This is art. A lot of people wanna talk about money, but this is art and art is progressive. Art moves forward, so a lot of people should just enjoy the artisticness of it, as opposed to trying to compete and put money into it. And just let people move forward and have as much fun as possible [and] create. That’s what we really got into this for, so that’s my opinion.”
